History
The Air Force Cross, originally entitled the Distinguished Service Cross (Air Force) was established on November 1, 1965. The Gold Cross was awarded to any individual, civilian or military, serving in any capacity with the Air Force in recognition of distinguished acts of extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy. The Cross recognized acts of valour that do not merit an award of the Medal of Honor, but which still involve the risk of personal life. Approximately 190 Crosses have been issued, with most of the awards being awarded for service in the Vietnam War.
The Cross may also be awarded posthumously.
Additional awards of the Cross are denoted by an oak leaf clasp worn on the ribbon.
There may be additional versions of the Cross which differ by composition.
