The United States Public Health Service Outstanding Service Medal is awarded to public health service officers in recognition of continuous leadership in carrying out the mission of the Public Health Service, or for a single accomplishment which has made a significant impact on the health of the nation. The Silver Medal may also be awarded for acts of heroism which protect health and property.
When the Medal is awarded for acts of heroism, a bronze "V" emblem device may be worn on the ribbon. Additionally, a gold star is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote subsequent awards of the Medal. A silver star may be worn in lieu of 5 gold stars.
