History

The Surgeon General's Exemplary Service Medal was established by Surgeon General, Dr C. Everett Koop, who served as Surgeon General between 1981 and 1989. The Medal is awarded at the sole discretion of the Surgeon General in office, and as such, has no specific nomination criteria. The award recognizes Public Health Service officers who have demonstrated exemplary service or who have performed a single accomplishment which has significantly contributed to the goals of the Public Health Service. Officers of other uniformed services and civilians who have made exemplary contributions to the office of the Surgeon General may also be eligible for the award.

A gold star is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote subsequent awards of the Medal. A silver star may be worn in lieu of 5 gold stars.
