History
The Isolated Hardship Award was originally established by the Department of Health and Human Services as a ribbon only award; with the Medal being introduced at a later date. The Medal is awarded to Public Health Service officers in recognition of 180 or more days of consecutive service in 1 out of 91 assignment areas designed by the Public Health Service as being isolated, insular, or remote. Officers of the ready reserve who have provided an aggregate 180 days of service over a 3-year term may also be eligible for the award.
A bronze star is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote additional awards of the Medal, and a silver star may be worn in lieu of 5 bronze stars.
