History

The NOAA Association of Commissioned Officers (ACO) Awards Medal is granted annually to NOAA Corps personnel as an award for the Junior Officer of the Year, Scientific Achievement, or Engineering Achievement. Awards made for the Junior Officer of the Year are presented to personnel of the rank of lieutenant commander or below in recognition of outstanding contributions to the NOAA and outstanding performances. Awards made for Scientific or Engineering Achievement are issued to NOAA Corps Officers or members of other uniformed services affiliated with the NOAA for distinguishing and outstanding contributions to science or engineering.

When awarded in recognition of Scientific Achievement, the Medal is issued with a silver “S” emblem worn on the ribbon. Likewise, when the Medal is awarded for Engineering Achievement, a silver “E” emblem is authorized for wear on the ribbon.
