History

The Selective Service System Distinguished Service Medal was established by the Selective Service Director, Curtis Tart, on October 1, 1971. The Silver Medal is awarded to civilian and military Selective Service System personnel in recognition of exceptional service to the Selective Service System Administration or improvements in system methods. Acts of great courage may also be eligible for the award of the Medal, however, such instances are rare.

There are 2 versions of the Medal which vary by composition. Early versions of the Medal are composed of sterling silver while later versions are composed of silvered bronze.
