The Secretary's Distinguished Service Award was established by the United States Department of State. The Gold Medal is awarded at the discretion of the Secretary of State to American military and civilian personnel of foreign and civil services in recognition of exceptionally outstanding leadership, professional competence and sustained significant accomplishments in the field of foreign affairs. Qualifying service must have a notable national or international impact and advance the national interests of the United States.
