The Secretary’s Award is presented by the United States Department of State to civil, military, and foreign employees of State, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and Marine Guards assigned to diplomatic duties. The Gold Medal is awarded in recognition of sacrifices to health and life made during the performance of regular duties. The Medal is often issued for serious injuries incurred while serving in the line of duty.
