History
The Transportation Distinguished Service Medal was established by the President of the United States, George W. Bush, by Executive Order on December 7, 1992, as the highest honour awarded by the Secretary of Transportation. The Medal was awarded annually on a one-time basis to members of the United States Coast Guard who served in a position of great responsibility in recognition of exceptionally meritorious service to the Department of Transportation or in other activities administered by the Secretary of Transportation. The Transportation Distinguished Service Medal was made obsolete and replaced by the Homeland Security Distinguished Service Medal in 2002.
