History
The Department of State Thomas Jefferson Star for Foreign Service was established by the United States Department of State. United States civilians and foreign nationals who are employed by the foreign or civil service who were injured or killed while serving in, or in connection to, an official capacity in a United States mission abroad since August 7, 1998, are eligible for the award of the Gold Star. Injuries that qualify for the award must be serious in nature and result in an incapacity which prevents the recipient from performing regular duties or which adversely affects their ability to obtain medical clearance.
The Star may be awarded posthumously to the next of kin.
