History

The Merchant Marine Meritorious Service Medal was established by Presidental Decree on August 29, 1944. The Medal is awarded to any American or foreign personnel of any vessel operated by or under the War Shipping Administration of the United States Maritime Commission in recognition of meritorious service that does not merit the award of the Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Medal, but which is still beyond the expectation of duty. The Medal was most often awarded for service during the Second World War.

The Medal may be awarded posthumously.

A gold star is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote subsequent awards of the Medal. However, there are no known examples of subsequent awards.
