History

The Mariner's Medal was established by Act of Congress on May 10, 1943. The Gold Cross was awarded to members of the Merchant Marine who were killed or wounded in action against an opposing armed enemy of the United States. Approximately 6,635 Crosses were awarded for service during the Second World War. The award of the Cross was suspended on June 30, 1956.

The Cross may be awarded posthumously to named beneficiaries of the recipient.

A gold star is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote subsequent awards of the Cross.
