History

The Korean Service Medal was initially established as the Korean Service Bar by Public Law on July 24, 1956, as a ribbon only. On May 30, 1988, the Merchant Marine Decorations and Medals Act authorized the creation of the Medal to be awarded with the ribbon. The Medal was awarded to Officers and enlisted men Merchant Marine vessels that operated in the waters between June 30, 1950, and September 30, 1953. It is estimated that approximately 2000 Medals were awarded.
