The Medal was presented to military and civil personnel in recognition of contributions made to the State in the field of Polar exploration and science. 60 Medals were awarded in gold, 50 Medals were awarded in silver, and 50 Medals were awarded in bronze. The award criteria for the different grades, however, remains uncertain.
