History
The Specially Meritorious Service Medal was authorized by Act of Congress on March 3, 1901. The Bronze Cross was awarded to Officers and enlisted men of the Navy and Marine Corps in recognition of non-combat heroic and conspicuous service performed during the Spanish-American War. The Medal was awarded for acts that occurred between March 1 to August 16, 1898. Many awards were made for the rescue of Spanish soldiers from burning ships following the battle of Santiago. Only 93 Medals are known to have been awarded.
