The Peary Polar Expedition Medal was established by Act of Congress on January 28, 1944, in commemoration of the expedition led by Admiral Robert E. Peary to the North Pole on April 6, 1909. The Medal was presented to 6 out of the 24 members of Peary's expedition in recognition of service in the field of science and polar exploration by aiding in the discovery of the North Pole.
