History

The Andre Capture Medal, also known as the Fidelity Medallion, was established by Congress on November 3, 1780. The award was presented by General Washington to 3 enlisted personnel; John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart, and David Williams, for the capture of the British Adjutant General, Major John Andre. The Medal is the oldest commemorative decoration of the United States.

The Medal features a motto on the reverse which translates to "The Love of Country Conquers."

All 3 of the original Medals have been lost to time.
