History

The Navy Occupation Service Medal was authorized by Navy Department General Order on January 28, 1948. The Bronze Medal was awarded to Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard personnel in recognition of the occupation of United States enemy territories during the Second World War. Service in Italy from November 8, 1945, to December 15, 1947, Trieste from May 9, 1945 to October 25, 1954, Germany from May 9, 1945 to May 5, 1955, Berlin from May 9, 1945 to October 2, 1990, Austria from May 9, 1945 to October 25, 1955, and Asiatic-Pacific Area from September 2, 1945 to April 27, 1952 qualified for the award of the Medal. Personnel who provided occupational service in Korea from June 27, 1950, to April 27, 1952, but who did not receive the Korean Service Medal, may also be eligible for the Medal.

"EUROPE" and "ASIA" clasps were authorized for wear with the Medal on the ribbon to denote service in campaign areas. Recipients of the Medal who served for 90 consecutive days in support of the Berlin airlift between June 26, 1948, and September 30, 1949, were eligible to receive the Berlin Airlift Device.

There are 2 versions of the Medal which differ by the reverse inscription of the service name for the Navy and the Marine Corps.
