The Bronze Medal was designed by Adolf A. Weinman and Vincent Glinsky. The date of the institution of the award is an approximation, as the exact institution date is uncertain. Some sources place the authorization date on December 10, 1934, while others place it in August 1936. More research is needed.

History

The Navy Expeditionary Medal was approved on July 24, 1930, but not officially established by General Order until 1934 or 1936. The Bronze Medal was awarded to naval personnel who landed on foreign territory and were engaged in operations against armed opposition or who have provided service in special situations for which no other service or campaign awards are available to recognize the act. The Medal was also awarded retroactively back to February 12, 1874, for service in the Hawaiian Islands.

A service star may be worn on the ribbon to denote additional awards of the Medal. Personnel who served in the defence of Wake Island between December 7 and December 22, 1941, are also eligible to receive a ribbon clasp inscribed "WAKE ISLAND" and when the ribbon is worn alone, a "W" emblem is worn to denote service in Wake Island. Only 72 "WAKE ISLAND" clasps were awarded to Naval personnel.
