History

The Mexican Service Medal (Navy and Marine Corps) was established by Navy Department General Order on February 11, 1918. The Bronze Medal was initially awarded as a one-time decoration to Officers and enlisted Navy and Marine Corps personnel who served ashore during the Vera Cruz expedition between April 21 and April 23, 1914. The award of the Medal was later expanded to recognize personnel who served aboard 1 out of 121 vessels between April 21 and November 26, 1914, and from March 14, 1916, to February 7, 1917. Service personnel who participated in military engagements against hostile Mexican forces outside of these time periods were also eligible for the award.

There are 2 versions of the Medal which vary by the reverse inscription according to the service name.

The Medal is stamped on the rim with the serial number. Different stamping styles were used, and later issues may not be numbered.
