History
The Kearny Medal, also commonly referred to as the Kearny Medal of Honor, was established by the Officers of Major General Philip Kearny's command. The Gold Cross was presented to the Officers who served under Kearny in the 1st Division, 3rd Corps, in recognition of honourable service. Approximately 320 Medals were privately issued.
The Cross features an inscription on the obverse which translates to "It is Fitting and Proper to Die for Your Country."
There are 2 versions of the Cross which vary by composition. The Cross was generally issued in gold and enamel, however, a Cross composed of gold, enamel, and brilliants was presented to Major General Birney.
