History

The Humanitarian Service Medal was established by President Gerald Ford by Executive Order on January 19, 1977. The Bronze Medal is awarded to any member of the United States military in recognition of direct distinguished and meritorious participation in a Department of Defence recognized humanitarian service operation since April 1, 1975. Since April 1, 1979, members of the Air Force have been eligible for the Medal. Recognized service may include, but is not limited to, natural disaster relief, evacuation of non-combatants from hostile areas, and humanitarian support to refugees.

A bronze service star may be worn on the ribbon to denote subsequent awards of the Medal.
