History
The Saint Kitts and Nevis Independence Medal was instituted on September 19, 1983, to mark the country’s secession from Great Britain.
The obverse features the crowned head of Queen Elizabeth II, inscribed with “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F: D:”, which translates to “Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen, Defender of the Faith”. The reverse features the Royal Cipher inscribed with “ST CHRISTOPHER NEVIS INDEPENDENCE 19TH SEPTEMBER 1983”.
Despite seceding in 1983, Saint Kitts and Nevis remains a part of the Commonwealth; therefore Her Majesty the Queen acts as Grand Master of the Order. The National Honours System is overseen by the Governor General, who is responsible for conferring the Medal.
