History

The Order of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa was founded by Law of January 28, 1933. It was reformed on July 1, 1941. It is currently conferred upon nationals and foreigners in recognition of outstanding diplomatic services and contributions to foster international relationships with Panama.

The Order consists of the Extraordinary Grand Cross, Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, and Knight.

Vasco Nuñez de Balboa was ...   a Spanish explorer and conqueror who was the first European that crossed the Panamanian Isthmus and reached the Pacific Ocean in 1513.

The Grand Officer is awarded to ministers, foreign envoys, legislative members, generals, and others.
