History
The Order of Francisco Morazán was instituted in 1941 to reward Honduran and foreign citizens in recognition of extraordinary achievements in military, scientific, literary, artistic, and humanitarian activities.
The Order was originally established with an unique grade, but in 1956, five more grades were added. The current Order's grades are Grand Collar, I Class Grand Cross (with golden breast star), II Class Grand Cross (with silvered breast star), Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight. The Grand Cross is awarded exclusively to Heads of States.
Francisco Morazán Quezada (1792-1842) was a central Honduran politician in the years following Central America's independence from Mexico in 1823. He was president of the Federal Republic of Central America from 1830 to 1839, and he was the head of state of Honduras in 1827-1830.
