History
The National Order of Honour & Merit (L'Ordre National Honneur at Mérite) was established by Law on May 28, 1926. It was awarded to both Haitians and foreigners, in recognition of outstanding diplomatic, judicial, civil, military, or consular services to the state.
It is the highest honor of merit awarded in Haiti, and it is conferred with five grades, i.e., Grand Cross, Gran Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight.
A member may receive a higher grade only after having completed three years in the prior grade.
Some resources stand that the Order had a first design completely different from the one depicted here. However, this information has not been confirmed.
