History
The Francisco Marroquín National Order (Orden Nacional de Francisco Marroquín) was founded in Guatemala in 1963. It is currently conferred upon educators and professors in recognition of outstanding contributions to education in the country.
The Order is the highest honor for educators in the country, and is awarded five times each year. There is limited information regarding to its grades.
The Order is named after Francisco Marroquín (1499-1563), a Spanish priest who was the first bishop of Guatemala, translator of Central American languages and provisional Governor of Guatemala. Also, he worked to free Indian slaves from Spanish oppression. The Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala City is named for him.
