History
The Great Bolivian Order of Literacy and Adult Education (La Gran Orden Boliviana de Alfabetización y Educación de Adultos) was established by the government of Bolivia, by decree of the 9th of July, 1970.
In 1970, Bolivian government designed the National Plan of Literacy, whose main objective was the inclusion of national majorities into the cultural and educational development of the nation. The Order was created as the highest recognition of those who philanthropically supported the achievement of this program.
Currently, it is conferred upon Bolivians and foreigners for contributing morally, intellectually, materially, or economically to literacy campaigns in Bolivia.
The Order has four grades: Grand Benefactor of Literacy, Commander, Officer, and Knight.
