History
The Order of Atahualpa (Orden de Atahualpa) is awarded by the government of Ecuador to civil and military personnel, nationals and foreigners, in recognition of extraordinary achievements for the protection of the country.
The Order was named after Atahualpa (c. 1502–1533), who was the last Inca Emperor before the Spanish conquest. During the Spanish conquest, Atahualpa was captured and used to control the Inca Empire. Eventually, the Spanish executed Atahualpa, effectively ending the empire.
