History

The The Most Illustrious Order of Independence of Zanzibar was founded by Sultan Sayyid Jamshid bin ‘Abdu’llah on November 9, 1963. This Order was largely awarded to commemorate the newly regained national independence and was conferred upon individuals who actively participated in this accomplishment. Moreover, it was to be used as a general decoration for meritorious service in the country’s future.

The original name of the Order is "Wisam al-Istiqlal".

The decoration was awarded in five classes: Commander Grand Crescent, Commander Star, Companion, Officer and Member.

The Order is since 1964 obsolete.
