History

The medal is conferred in recognition of the April 26, 1964 unification of Tanganyka and Zanzibar that resulted in the formation of Tanzania.

The ribbon for the Army has five red stripes and four white stripes.

The ribbon for the Police Force has five blue stripes and four white stripes.

The ribbon for the Prison Service has five green stripes and four white stripes.
