History

This Order was conferred upon members of the South African Armed Forces in recognition of services concerning national defence and security.

It replaced the Star of South Africa decoration in 1978. A civilian division was added on October 17, 1978. This Order was discontinued on December 2, 2002. The Gold Chain (Military) was discontinued on March 23, 1988.
