This medal was conferred upon citizens of South Africa in recognition of acts of gallantry.
It was previously known as the King's Medal for Bravery (1939-1952), but was renamed the Queen's Medal of Bravery on December 15, 1952. In 1970, it became the Woltemade Decoration for Bravery, and was re-designed in 1988 as the Woltemade Cross for Bravery.
