This medal was conferred upon South African citizens in recognition of acts of gallantry.

It was renamed the Queen's Medal of Bravery on December 15, 1952. In 1970, it became the Woltemade Decoration for Bravery, and was re-designed in 1988 as the Woltemade Cross for Bravery.
