History

The Order of Patriotic Merit is conferred upon Burundian military personnel in recognition of distinguished service and acts of bravery, and upon Burundian civilians in recognition of life-saving actions. It may also be awarded posthumously.

The Grand Officer is awarded to General Officers for 10 years of service, to Senior Officers for 15 years of service, and to Junior Officers for 20 years of service.
