History

The Order of Patriotic Merit is conferred upon Burundian military personnel in recognition of distinguished service and acts of bravery, and upon Burundian civilians in recognition of life-saving actions. It may also be awarded posthumously.

The Gold Medal is awarded to Non-Commissioned Officers for 10 years of service, and to soldiers for 12 years of service.
