The Order of Patriotic Merit is conferred upon Burundian military personnel in recognition of distinguished service and acts of bravery, and upon Burundian civilians in recognition of life-saving actions. It may also be awarded posthumously.

The Commander is awarded to General Officers for 5 years of service, to Senior Officers for 10 years of service, to Junior Officers for 14 years of service, and to Non-Commissioned Officers for 20 years of service.
