History

The Order of Civil Merit is conferred upon Burundian politicians, magistrates, and other civil servants for exceptional service. It is also conferred upon Burundian citizens from the private sector who have rendered distinguished service to the nation.

Members of the Order are classified into four categories of rank based on their professional position. Each grade is conferred in recognition of multiple lengths of serv ...  ice, based on the category of rank of the recipient. The categories, in order of descending rank, are Above Rank, Direction, Collaboration, and Execution.

The Grand Officer is awarded to those in the Above Rank category for 10 years of service, and to those in the Direction category for 20 years of service.
