History

The National Order of the Republic is conferred upon politicians, members of the government, and Burundian citizens for meritorious service rendered to the nation, as well to ambassadors who have made significant contributions to Burundi. It may be conferred personally by the President upon foreign heads of state or other prominent foreign individuals. It may also be awarded posthumously.

The Grand Cordon is awarded to foreign ambassadors for 3 years of service, or to foreign heads of state and prominent foreigners on special occasions.
