Somalia
The Federal Republic of Somalia is a country in East Africa. It is bounded by the Indian Ocean, by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Guardafui Channel and Somali Sea to the east, and Kenya to the southwest. Somalia is located in the Horn of Africa. The capital and largest city is Mogadishu. The main language spoken in Somalia is Somali. Some also speak Arabic, Italian, and English. The country has a population of 11 million people and is one of the poorest countries in the world.
The Republic of Somalia was formed in 1960 by the federation of a former Italian colony and a British protectorate. After that Somalia descended into civil war after the overthrow of its ruthless dictator, Mohammed Siad Barre, in 1991. Somalia is also known as a "failed state", because since 1991, there has been no national government recognized throughout the country.
The Order of the Somali Star was the highest title and was conferred upon individuals in recognition of meritorious service to Somalia.
