Senegal
The Republic of Senegal is a country in West Africa. It is bounded by Mauritania, Mali, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. Senegal has a population of 15,4 million people. The capital and largest city is Dakar. The official language is French.
One interesting fact is the meaning from Senegal, because in the 16th century when the Portuguese visited the country’s coast, the fishermen said “sunu gaal”, which translates into “these are our boats”. The Portuguese, who understood nothing, simply named their land “Senegal”
The European powers that captured much of Senegal's history are the French, Portuguese, the Netherlands and the British. At the time, the world knew Senegal for three things; slaves, ivory, and gold.
Today's Senegal came under French control. On June 20, 1960, formed Senegal an independent republic federated with Mali, but the federation collapsed within four months. Senegal is the only country in West Africa which wasn’t overrun by a military coup. After independence, a government model was introduced in the Republic of Senegal that was strongly oriented towards France.
The Order of the Lion was the highest title and was conferred to national and foreign individuals, in the military and civil sphere, for exception merit and service to the Republic of Senegal.
