Guinea
The Republic of Guinea is a west-coastal country in West Africa. It is situated near Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. Guinea was known as French Guinea. The capital city is Conakry. 12.4 million people live in Guinea. The official language is French.
Systematic colonization attempts by France began in 1850, however, they were met with fierce resistance. Guinea gained its independence from France in 1958. Since then, the country has experienced many wars and political uprisings. Among other things, Guinea has become a military dictatorship just a few years after the founding of the state in 1958.
The regular armed forces of Guinea, the Forces armées guinéennes, are about 9,700 strong.
The National Order of Merit is the highest title.
