Cote D'Ivoire
The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire is a country on the south coast of West Africa. It is bounded by Guinea, Liberia, Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana and the Gulf of Guinea. The capital city is Yamoussoukro and largest city is the port city of Abidjan. Abidjan is the city with the third biggest French-speaking population anywhere in the world. Côte d’Ivoire’s population is over 23.7 million. The official language is French, although around 60 native languages are also spoken.
Until colonization, the southern part of Côte d'Ivoire had no state formation. From the 13th century, the north was involved with trade and war with Islam. Since the 15th century, the Portuguese traded with the residents from the coast, but have been displaced by the French since the 17th century. In 1843, the country a French colony. In 1960, the country achieved independence, led by Félix Houphouët-Boigny, who ruled the country until 1993. After that Ivory Coast established close political and economic ties with its West African neighbours while retaining close relations to France. Côte d’Ivoire grows coffee and cocoa, a large reason that the country was an economic powerhouse in West Africa during the 1960s and 1970s. However, in the 1980s the country experienced an economic crisis, a coup d'état in 1999 and a few religiously-grounded civil wars. In 2000, the country adopted a new constitution.
The National Order of Côte d'Ivoire is the highest title and was established shortly after the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire declared independence from France in 1960.
