The Republic of Chad is a country in north-central Africa. The landlocked country is bounded by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest, and Niger to the west. It is named after Lake Chad. The lake is the largest wetland in Chad and the second largest in Africa. The capital and largest city is N'Djamena. The estimated population of the Chad is 13,6 million. The official language is French and Arabic.

Chad has been inhabited since at least 500 B.C. In 1920, France conquered the territory and incorporated it as part of French Equatorial Africa. Chad attained its independence from France on August 11th, 1960. Since independence, the country has suffered instability and violence, stemming mostly from tensions between the mainly Arab-Muslim north and the predominantly Christian and animist south.

The National Order of Chad was the highest title and was conferred in recognition of outstanding services to the Republic.
