History

Johann Schwerdtner was born in Vienna on July 14, 1834. He was the son of a carpenter. Johann studied at the Academy of Fine Arts starting in 1846. In 1847, he started an apprenticeship with an engraver, as well as learn drawing and modelling. Johann developed an eye disease which interrupted his personal career for a few years, but from 1854 to 1864 he worked as a map engraver in the military geography office. This eye disease would later lead to blindness in Johann's later years. He trained with the engraver Franz Jauner and the medalist W. Seidan while working as a map engraver. In 1864, Johann opened his own atelier where he began designing and producing the Bulgarian Orders of Civil and Military Merit. Johann was a founding member of the cooperative of engravers of Vienna and from 1869 a member of the cooperative of the visual artists of Vienna and their sculpture association. He was a member of several other artist clubs and associations. He had many successful students emerge from his workshop who would follow in his footsteps as an engraver. Prior to 1900, the firm's address was located at Mariahilferstrasse 47. Between 1900 and 1915, the firm was moved to Gentzgasse 104. The firm continued to make insignia until approximately 1918. Johann died on March 15, 1920 in Vienna. It is unclear whether the firm continued to make insignia after Johann's death, but some believe the firm produced insignia until the 1940s.
